Use of the Sequential Intercept Model as an Approach to Decriminalization of People With Serious Mental Illness was written by Mark R. Munetz, M.D. and Patricia A. Griffin, Ph.D., and published in the April 2006 issue of Psychiatric Services.

This article provides an overview of the Sequential Intercept Model. The Sequential Intercept Model is presented as conceptual model that addresses the interface between the criminal justice and mental health systems. In this original study that sets the precedence for Sequential Intercept Model Mapping Workshops we know today, Munetz and Griffin point out how the Sequential Intercept Model helps localities systematically develop initiatives to reduce the criminalization of people with mental illness in their community.

The model presented in this article predates the linear version of the Sequential Intercept model that is used today.
