Jennifer Johnson is the founder of J.K. Johnson Advisors, which provides consulting, training, and technical assistance services at the intersection of mental health and law. She is also a partner in Johnson Freedman Woods Education, which conducts continuing legal education webinars on mental health and law for Thomson Reuters Publishing. For nearly 20 years, Ms. Johnson was a Senior Trial Attorney at the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office, where she specialized in representing clients with serious mental illness facing felony criminal charges. In 2002, she worked with a diverse group of community stakeholders to develop and implement San Francisco’s Behavioral Health Court and was the supervising attorney in the court until 2017. Additionally, Ms. Johnson was a cofounder of the San Francisco Police Department’s Crisis Intervention Team Training Program in 2011. She is a member of the Criminal Justice Advisory Panel for the Arc’s National Center on Criminal Justice and Disability and a senior consultant with Policy Research Associates. Ms. Johnson has been a lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley Law since 2012 and co-teaches a mental health and law seminar with neuropsychiatrist George Woods. She has a bachelor’s degree in English and French from the University of Michigan and a J.D. from University of California, Davis School of Law.
